What steep ground asks of a pole
Grip and strap choice follows the same logic: you want a hold that stays put through a long ascent and does not slip when the shaft is planted at an angle. Colors are mostly dark, black, petrol, silver-grey, and pewter, with yellow and white accents on some carbon models. A single pole or a pair both appear, so you can carry one for balance or two for a full rhythm.
When a mountaineering pole is the wrong pick
If your walking is mostly flat trail or pavement, the stiffer, heavier build here is more pole than you need, and a lighter telescopic pair will feel easier over distance. For pure Nordic walking or casual day hikes, the firm plant and compact fold of these poles are not the reason you would buy them. They are built for ground that tilts, and on gentle ground that shows up as extra weight in the hand.
Mountaineering pole questions
Are these poles sold as singles or pairs?
Both appear in the samples, so check whether the listing is one pole or two.
What is the longest length available?
The samples top out around 130 to 135 cm.
Do these fold small enough for a pack?
Many are folding or collapsible, which helps when the route turns to scrambling.
Are carbon or aluminum poles better for alpine use?
Both appear here, with carbon lighter and aluminum generally more forgiving on rock.
