How telescopic differs from z-folding and collapsible poles

Z-folding poles break into three or four short segments joined by an internal cord, so they pack smaller but adjust only at a single point. Telescopic poles trade that compactness for a longer collapsed length and a wider range of usable heights. If you want to share a pair between two people of different heights, or you switch between uphill and downhill often, the sliding sections give you more room to move.

Collapsible poles overlap with telescopic in name, but the mechanism is the same idea: sections that slide and lock. The distinction in practice comes down to how many sections and how short they pack. A two-section telescopic pole is stiffer and simpler; a three-section version collapses smaller but has one more lock to check. Neither is better in the abstract — it depends on whether you prioritize pack size or a rigid feel on rough ground.
